Oil and Gas
Mauritania is now an LNG-producing country through the bp-operated Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 project, shared with Senegal. The sector also presents project-specific opportunities in offshore services, logistics, maintenance, local supply, and supporting infrastructure, subject to commercial, technical, regulatory, and environmental requirements.
Key Oil and Gas Projects
The assets below represent different stages of Mauritania’s offshore gas landscape: commercial LNG production at GTA Phase 1, evaluation of discovered gas resources in the BirAllah area, and exploration prospects promoted by SMH. Project status and potential participation routes must be assessed asset by asset.
Greater Tortue
Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1
Operator: bp. Location: Mauritania–Senegal maritime border. Status: Producing. GTA Phase 1 averaged approximately 2.65 million tonnes per annum of gross LNG-equivalent production in the second quarter of 2026, with nine gross LNG cargoes lifted during the quarter.
BirAllah Gas Discovery Area
Status: Undeveloped investment prospect. Kosmos stated that its BirAllah licence expired in April 2024. SMH has continued to seek strategic partners, and in June 2025 signed a confidentiality agreement with Sonatrach concerning BirAllah exploration data. Current licensing, resource classification, and participation terms require confirmation with SMH and the relevant authorities.
Block C7 Exploration Prospect
Status: Exploration-stage investment prospect. In November 2024, SMH presented Block C7 alongside BirAllah as an opportunity for potential partners. Unlike GTA Phase 1, it is not a producing asset. Current availability, data access, licensing terms, work commitments, and environmental requirements must be confirmed directly with SMH and the relevant authorities.

The entities below hold distinct operating, investment, or national participation roles in GTA Phase 1 and Mauritania’s hydrocarbons sector. Their inclusion identifies verified roles and does not imply endorsement, availability for partnership, or affiliation with GPIS.
bp — United Kingdom
Role: GTA Phase 1 operator; 56% working interest. bp leads project operations within a partnership that also includes Kosmos Energy, PETROSEN, and SMH.
Kosmos Energy — United States
Role: GTA Phase 1 partner; 27% working interest. As a non-operating partner, Kosmos publishes regular production and LNG-cargo updates that provide current evidence of the project’s operating performance.
SMH — Mauritania
Role: Mauritania’s national hydrocarbons company; 7% working interest in GTA Phase 1. SMH represents Mauritanian participation in the project and serves as a key national counterpart for hydrocarbons-sector data and project engagement.
