Mining
Mauritania has established iron ore, gold, and copper operations led by SNIM, Kinross Tasiast, and First Quantum’s Guelb Moghrein mine. Investment opportunities extend across exploration, mine development, mineral processing, logistics, maintenance, and other specialized mining services.
Key Minerals
Iron Ore
SNIM reports annual iron-ore sales of more than 14 million tonnes and operates an integrated chain covering mining, processing, a railway of more than 700 km, and export facilities at Nouadhibou.
Gold
The Kinross-operated Tasiast mine is a major industrial gold operation. Its 24k expansion increased processing capacity to 24,000 tonnes per day, and Kinross reports a mine life extending to 2033.
Copper
First Quantum’s Guelb Moghrein mine reported 2025 production of 14,600 tonnes of copper and 32,000 ounces of gold. In 2026, it continues copper-gold processing while preparing for a gold-focused transition.
Where Investors Can Participate
Investment entry is not limited to mine ownership. Opportunities may arise across exploration, project development, processing, infrastructure, and specialized services, subject to project feasibility, licensing, and regulatory requirements.
Exploration & Project Development
Potential entry points include geological assessment, drilling, resource evaluation, feasibility studies, mine planning, and technical partnerships, subject to licensing and project-specific conditions.
Processing & Infrastructure
Opportunities may include mineral beneficiation, processing facilities, power and water solutions, rail and road logistics, storage, and export infrastructure where commercially and technically viable.
Mining Services & Local Supply
Demand may extend to equipment supply and maintenance, engineering, environmental and safety services, laboratory testing, workforce training, digital systems, and local procurement support.
GPIS Support for Mining Investors
GPIS supports mining investors by helping define information needs, assess the local operating context, identify relevant institutions and counterparties, clarify sector-specific procedures, and coordinate practical next steps in Mauritania. This support is advisory and does not replace legal, technical, environmental, or regulatory due diligence.
